Why are Singapore’s kids so good at maths?

A recent article in the Financial Times ‘Why Singapore’s kids are so good at maths’ examines why this relatively small country consistently ranks near or at the top of the global maths comparisons. Andreas Schleicher, Head of the OECD’s education assessment program believes that a crucial factor in its success is that “the Singapore curriculum is more stripped down at a primary level than in many western countries, covering fewer topics in far greater depth. When you look at England and the US (their curriculum) is a mile-wide and an inch-deep. They teach a lot of things but at a shallow level. Mathematics in Singapore is not about knowing everything.
